Religious Education
We may have different religions, different languages, different coloured skin, but we all belong to one human race.

Our Religious Education curriculum aims to motivate and inspire children; challenging all learners whilst ensuring that our school Christian values are at the heart. We strongly believe that the purpose of R.E. is to develop pupils’ religious literacy and we aim for children to be able to hold balanced and well-informed conversations about religion and belief. Our distinctive Christian ethos alongside our Vision of Believe, Achieve, Succeed are at the heart of our curriculum and these permeate all aspects of school life, having a positive impact on pupils’ personal development.
Religious Education enables pupils to appreciate their own and others’ beliefs and cultures, helping them to develop a clear understanding of the significance of religion in their own area as well as in the world today. It intends to promote religious understanding and respect, and to challenge prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping.
It is also concerned with the promotion of each pupil’s self-worth, enabling them to reflect on their uniqueness as human beings, to share their feelings and emotions with others and to appreciate the importance of forming and maintaining positive relationships.
Religious Education is taught in accordance with the Cumbrian Agreed Syllabus for RE 2023 (click link for document) which is rooted in the disciplinary approaches of theology, philosophy and human sciences.
- Theology: This is about thinking through believing. It looks at where beliefs come from, how they have changed over time, how they are applied differently in different contexts and how they relate to each other.
- Philosophy: This is about thinking through thinking. It is about finding out how and whether things make sense. It deals with questions of morality and ethics. It takes seriously the nature of reality, knowledge and existence.
- Human Sciences: This is about thinking through living. It explores the diverse ways in which people practise their beliefs. It engages with the impact of beliefs on individuals, communities and societies.
Our Religious Education curriculum ensures that children are able to make links between Christian faith and those of others in their community and in the wider world. Our curriculum enables children to become active citizens, serving their neighbour and enabling them to become global citizens and courageous advocates for change in the world, from a local to global level.
